Today, we honor Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor. As a contract surgeon during the Civil War, she often crossed enemy lines to attend to the wounded. Despite being captured and held as a prisoner of war, her unwavering dedication to medical service and her pioneering spirit in advocating for women's rights left an indelible mark on American history.
