This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro, U.S. Coast Guard. On Sept. 27, 1942, at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, Munro used his Higgins boat as a shield under intense fire to cover the evacuation of nearly 500 Marines—and was killed in action as the last boats pulled off the beach. He remains the only Coast Guardsman to receive the Medal of Honor. We wear red to remember the courage of those deployed and the sacrifice of all who serve.
