This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Commander Ernest E. Evans of the U.S. Navy, commanding officer of the USS Johnston (DD-557). During the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944, Evans led his outgunned destroyer into battle against a vastly superior Japanese fleet, courageously placing his ship between the enemy and the American escort carriers it was protecting. Despite being seriously wounded and sustaining devastating damage, he continued directing the fight until the Johnston was lost. For his extraordinary heroism and leadership, Commander Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
