Today we honor Master Sergeant Raul Perez "Roy" Benavidez. On May 2, 1968, Benavidez heard a call for help from a trapped patrol surrounded by 1,000 enemy soldiers. Armed with only a knife, he jumped from a helicopter and saved at least eight men despite being severely wounded. Benavidez survived 37 wounds and received the Distinguished Service Cross and four Purple Hearts.
