Today, we honor Staff Sergeant Ruben Rivers, a member of the U.S. Army’s 761st Tank Battalion during World War II. In 1944, while leading his unit in France, Rivers sustained severe leg wounds but refused to stop fighting. Despite his injuries, he fought valiantly, helping his unit succeed in battle. Tragically, he was killed shortly after at the age of 23. Rivers was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1997 for his extraordinary courage and leadership.
