Today, we honor U.S. First Sergeant William McDowell, one of the first Black Marines who served with distinction in World War II, the Korean War, and beyond. Inspired by his father, a Harlem Hellfighter, McDowell enlisted at 17 and trained at Montford Point, North Carolina. He deployed to Okinawa, Japan, and later to Korea, where he became a section leader and was wounded, earning Purple Hearts for his bravery. McDowell’s service also included roles as an instructor and with the U.S. State Department. His legacy reflects the courage and pioneering spirit of the Montford Point Marines, who were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2012.
