Today, we honor Captain Riley Leroy Pitts. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 1967, at age 33, he showed extraordinary bravery while leading his unit under heavy fire. Despite overwhelming odds, he risked his life to protect his soldiers, attempting to disable an enemy position with a grenade. He was killed in action during this mission. Riley Pitts was awarded the Medal of Honor later that year, becoming the first African American officer to receive this honor.
