Today, we are proud to honor Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins, U.S. Army, Medal of Honor recipient. While on duty in Abu Samak, Iraq, Staff Sergeant Atkins spotted four suspicious individuals near his post. Leading his squad to investigate, he noticed one acting erratically. As he approached to search him, the individual became aggressive, and during the struggle, Atkins realized the man was reaching for something under his clothes. In a selfless act of bravery, Staff Sergeant Atkins tackled the man and shielded his squad, sacrificing his life to protect them when the bomb exploded. His courage and sacrifice earned him the Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously on March 27, 2019.
