Today, we honor Sergeant Matthew Williams, U.S. Army Infantry, Medal of Honor recipient, for his extraordinary courage on April 6, 2008, during Operation Enduring Freedom. Williams exposed himself to enemy fire while carrying and loading casualties onto helicopters, all while continuing to direct commando firepower to suppress numerous insurgent positions. His actions ensured the survival of at least four critically wounded soldiers and prevented the lead element of the assault force from being overrun by the enemy. In recognition of his bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on in 2019.
