Honoring HOnoring U.S. Navy SEAL Petty Officer Michael E Thornton

Today we recognize U.S. Navy SEAL Petty Officer Michael E. Thornton, who earned the Medal of Honor for saving his team leader’s life during a covert mission in Vietnam on October 31, 1972. When Lieutenant Thomas Norris was severely wounded and presumed dead, Thornton defied orders, ran back through enemy fire, and carried him to safety. He then swam over two hours with Norris and another wounded ally until rescue arrived. His courage and loyalty are the essence of service and sacrifice that we reflect on every R.E.D. Friday.
