HOnoring Technical Sergeant John L. Levitow of the U.S. Air Force

This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Technical Sergeant John L. Levitow of the U.S. Air Force, a loadmaster who served during the Vietnam War. On February 24, 1969, after an enemy mortar round exploded inside his AC-47 aircraft, Levitow—despite suffering more than 40 wounds—crawled through the damaged aircraft to pull a burning flare away from thousands of rounds of ammunition before pushing it safely out the cargo door. His selfless actions saved the aircraft and everyone aboard, earning him the Medal of Honor. As we wear red today, we honor his courage, his sacrifice, and his unwavering commitment to his fellow Airmen.
