Honoring Sergeant First Class Paul Ray Smith
This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Sergeant First Class Paul Ray Smith of the U.S. Army for his gallantry during combat near Baghdad International Airport on April 4, 2003.
As enemy forces launched a fierce assault, Smith organized defenses and manned a .50-caliber machine gun under intense fire, holding the line so wounded soldiers could escape. He was killed in action, but his leadership saved countless lives. For his bravery above and beyond the call of duty, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
