HOnoring U.S. Army Contract Surgeon Mary Edwards Walker
This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Contract Surgeon Mary Edwards Walker for her courageous and unconventional service during the American Civil War. As the first female surgeon in the U.S. Army, she crossed enemy lines to treat wounded soldiers and civilians alike — even enduring capture and imprisonment for her efforts.
In November 1865 she was awarded the Medal of Honor — and she remains the only woman ever to receive it. As we wear red today, we honor her fearless dedication to healing, service, and justice.
