HOnoring Private First Class James P. Powell
This R.E.D. Friday, we honor Private First Class James P. Powell, born May 20, 1918, in Smithfield, Virginia. A farmer and welder before the war, he enlisted in June 1944 and deployed that December as a heavy machine gunner in the Rhineland campaign under General Patton. On January 18, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, he was wounded by a German grenade and later received the Purple Heart and Bronze Service Star. After nearly a year recovering in hospitals in France and the U.S., he returned home to farm for decades until his passing in July 2006 at age 88.
